In 4th grade students read a variety of texts in a variety of contexts. This year the focus is shifted from "Learning to Read" to "Reading to Learn". Students will be reading out of our Language Arts text, the program, "Open Court" participating in literature circles, class novel studies, and reader's workshop- where students practice reading strategies with rich literature that are "just right" for them. Below are pictures of some of the wonderful literature that students will be exposed to in our fourth grade classroom.
In 4th grade, students also jump from one paragraph writing to multi-paragraph essays with thesis statements and evidence to support their ideas. Students will participate in a writer's workshop where we examine both literature with a "writer's eye" and then apply those strategies to our writing. Some of the genres that we cover at narrative writing, response to literature, summary, opinion, and non-fiction research reports.
